Limelight

Kailey McCune

Most people might be surprised to learn that I played competitive volleyball for nearly 10 years. I believe being an athlete taught me how to become strong in numerous ways that are applicable to my journey as a Christian artist. This project was challenging because I’m still learning about myself. My initial idea was to showcase the limelight in which society tends to view Christians. The contrast between my portraits display what others might think hanging out with me (a straight, white Christian girl) would look like versus what hanging out with me would actually look like. I remember being teased during high school because of my beliefs. Most of the popular kids thought I was a goody-two-shoes who prayed to a God that didn’t exist. I want to be seen not only as a creative and unique person, but also as someone who isn’t as shallow and insensible as the world makes people like me out to be.
