Hate Crime Research – Galliano

Nancy responds:

What is something people might not know about your when they first meet you?

Something that people may not know about me is that I am the first in my family to go to
a University. I am also a Psychology Major and Human Services Minor, but previously
majored in Sociology.

What made you select this particular article?

I selected the article, “Galliano man charged with hate crimes”, because this was an article that involved a hate crime intention towards the Latinx community, specifically a man. This was particularly more personal to me, as I am part of the Latinx community as well. Seeing hate crimes occur to the people that I belong to concerns and worries me.

What might be missing from the story that would be important for readers to know?

I believe that there should have been more intel in regards to the victim. Most of the article was about the perpetrator, while the victim had been briefly discussed. Something that would have been helpful, would be to have known what happened to the victim after, what his thoughts were, etc.

Share a little bit about your empathy towards the victim or victims family.

I feel really bad for the victim because he was punched repeatedly. Physical aggressivity due to someone’s race is not okay by any means. There was no additional information about the victim, other than being punched, and having the aggressor taken into custody. I believe there should have been information on how the family was affected by it and their thoughts on the hate crime.
